Taxi to the airport or drive yourself?
Driving to Schiphol yourself sounds simple until you count the parts: the drive in morning traffic, finding the right car park, the shuttle to the terminal, and the parking bill waiting for you at the end of the trip.
A fixed-price taxi removes all four. Whether that is worth it depends mostly on how long you are away and how many of you are travelling.
The cost comparison
For a short trip of one or two days, driving yourself can be competitive. From roughly three days onwards, official airport parking usually costs more than a return taxi transfer, and cheaper off-site car parks add a shuttle ride at both ends.
- One or two days away: driving yourself is often cheaper.
- Three days to a week: a taxi is usually the better deal.
- More than a week: a taxi is almost always cheaper than parking.
- Two or more passengers: the taxi price is per car, so it improves further.
Timing and stress
- No need to leave extra early for parking and a shuttle bus.
- Dropped at the terminal door with your luggage.
- No driving after a night flight when you are exhausted.
- Flight tracking on the return leg, so a delay is not your problem.
- 80 minutes of free waiting time after landing.
When driving yourself still makes sense
If you live close to the airport, are away for only a night, or need the car at the other end of a road trip, driving is the sensible option. Everything else — early flights, long trips, groups, families with luggage — tends to favour a transfer with the price agreed in advance.
