Taxi during rush hour
Dutch rush hour runs roughly from 07:00 to 09:00 and from 16:00 to 19:00, and on the Randstad motorways it is reliably slow rather than occasionally slow.
With a metered taxi, that costs you money. With a fixed price, it costs you nothing but time — and even the time can be planned.
How much extra time to allow
- Add 30 minutes for a journey inside the Randstad in peak hours.
- Add 45 minutes for a route crossing Amsterdam, Utrecht or Rotterdam.
- Friday afternoon is the busiest period of the week.
- Rain reliably adds another 15–20 minutes.
Why a fixed price matters here
A taximeter charges for time as well as distance, so a traffic jam raises the amount you pay. With a price agreed in advance, the delay is our risk. That is precisely why fixed prices are most valuable on exactly the journeys people worry about most.
Planning around the peak
- Leaving before 06:30 or after 09:30 avoids the worst of it.
- For a flight, work backwards from check-in and add the peak margin.
- Give the driver a mobile number in case of a diversion.
- Do not stack appointments back to back on a peak-hour route.
